Carpet Stain Cleaning Tips Using Home Cleaning Products

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
There are ton of products on the market to clean stains. And it is possible to clean them without chemicals. The trick is to attend to those spills quickly,  Bellow you can find the most common stains and some home remedies to clean them right up. But first to our disclaimer: This site is provided as advice only and please try any methods here in an inauspicious place in other words somewhere that is not visible (corner, closet, etc...) so you can see if the carpet will bleed or discolor etc... Types of Carpet Stains

Solution


Ball pen (ink)

Cleaning solution #4, If needed, Cleaning solution #2


Beers and wines

Cleaning solution #1, then Cleaning solution #2 (if necessary)


Blood Stains

Cleaning solution #1 then followed by Cleaning solution #2


Chewing Gum

Apply freezing agent and break gum away when hard, then vacuum


Chocolate

Use a knife to remove as much of the chocolate as possible. Do not rub in, but scrape away to keep from spreading. Follow by Cleaning solution #3


Cooking Oil

Cleaning solution #4, If necessary, follow with Cleaning solution #3


Crayola / Crayons

Use a knife to remove as much as possible, then Cleaning solution #4, If not successful do Cleaning solution #3, If not successful do Cleaning solution #5


Egg

Remove as much as possible with knife OR Blotting, then Cleaning solution #2, If not successful do Cleaning solution #3, If not successful do Cleaning solution #5


Floor Wax Stains

Remove as much as possible with Blotting, then Cleaning solution #4, If not successful do Cleaning solution #3, If not successful do Cleaning solution #5


Fruit Juices and other Juices

Do Cleaning solution #5 or Cleaning solution #3, Use a steam cleaning machine to pick up large amounts of spill


Gravy Sauce and other sauces

Remove as much as possible with knife, AND through Blotting then, Cleaning solution #4, if not successful do Cleaning solution #3


Grease and Oil

Remove as much as possible with knife, AND through Blotting then, Cleaning solution #4, if not successful do Cleaning solution #3


Ketchup

Remove as much as possible with Blotting then, Cleaning solution #2, if not successful do Cleaning solution #3, if not successful do Cleaning solution #5


Lipstick

Remove as much as possible with blotting, then Cleaning solution #4, Cleaning solution #3, Cleaning solution #5


Milk

Remove as much as possible with blotting, Cleaning solution #4, Cleaning solution #3, then blot again to dry


Mud

Allow mud to dry completely, then remove as much as possible with a knife, then Cleaning solution #3, Cleaning solution #5 (if not successful)


Mustard

Remove as much as possible with blotting, then Cleaning solution #2, Cleaning solution #3, Cleaning solution #5. Mustard with numeric in it is a permanent discoloration of the carpet. It can not be completely removed.


Nail Polish

Remove as much as possible with blotting. Then, use an oil based nail polish remover. Then do Cleaning solution #3, Cleaning solution #5


Paint Stains

Remove as much as possible with blotting, DO NOT Rub. Then Cleaning solution #4, Cleaning solution #3, then blot again to dry


Pet Odor

Remove as much as possible with blotting OR with a Scraper (whichever is needed). Then Cleaning solution #2, if necessary Cleaning solution #3, if necessary Cleaning solution #5


Play Dough

Allow play dough to dry completely if it has been rubbed in, Remove as much as possible with knife, Cleaning solution #4, Cleaning solution #3, Cleaning solution #5


Rust Stain

Do Cleaning solution #6, Cleaning solution #3, Cleaning solution #5, If this does not help, professional help may be needed.


Salad Dressing

Remove as much as possible with blotting, then Cleaning solution #4, Cleaning solution #3, Cleaning solution #5


Stains From Vomit

Remove as much as possible through blotting, then do Cleaning solution #2, if not successful Cleaning solution #3, if not successful Cleaning solution #5


Spaghetti Sauce Stain

Remove as much as possible with blotting, then Cleaning solution #1 OR Cleaning solution #4, if not successful do Cleaning solution #3, then Cleaning solution #5


Tea and Coffee Stains

Remove as much as possible through blotting, then do Cleaning solution #1, then Cleaning solution #3 followed by Cleaning solution #5


Urine Stains

Remove as much as possible with blotting, then do Cleaning solution #2, Cleaning solution #3, Cleaning solution #5




The Cleaning solutions:
These are some home made cleaning solutions  for cleaning your carpets.  Find your stain in the chart below and then look up the Cleaning Solution to clean it right up. 

 Cleaning solution #1:

  1. Combine one part of white vinegar with one part of water.
  2. Using a spray bottle to saturate the stain.
  3. Allow ten to fifteen minutes dwell time.
  4. Using a sponge clean in a circular motion.
  5. Rinse with warm water.
  6. Using a soft brush lift the pile..
  7. Using 4-6 layers of white paper towels, or terry cloth towel place paper on top of stain, place something heavy on top. Allow to sit until it has dried.

Cleaning solution #2: 

  1. Add one teaspoon of clear, household type ammonia to half cup of water.

  2. Spray or applied to the carpet directly.

  3. Do not over wet the carpets backing when applying.

  4. After applying use white paper towels to blot.

  5. Allow to dry.



Cleaning solution #3:
Detergent solution: A detergent solution can be made of hand soap or dish soap. 

  1. Combine  one quarter  teaspoon of detergent to one quart of water. Make sure the soap does not contain bleach or lanolin.

  2. Blot the stain with white paper towels or terry cloth towel to remove as much of the stain as possible.
  3. Apply detergent solution.
  4. Scrub the area.
  5. Blot out the stain and detergent.

 

Cleaning solution #4:

  1. Isopropyl rubbing alcohol purchased from your grocery store or department store.
  2. Pour some onto a clean, white terry towel or other cloth. Paper towels must be white.
  3. Blot to remove as much as possible until stain is removed.
  4. If the stain is small, blot in one direction only so that you do not spread the stain.

Cleaning solution #5:
Often, just plain water can loosen up  the stain to help with removal. Large spills can be cleaned up with a wet dry vac or a steam cleaner. Dry as thoroughly as possible.

 

Cleaning solution #6:
Lemon juice can remove some tough stains.

  1. Lemon juice is fine as long as it does not contain anything added.
  2. Spray a good amount onto the area but do not wet the padding.
  3. Let sit up to five or six minutes.
  4. Blot with a paper or terry cloth towel.


To use the chart below, start with the #1 cleaning solution Then, work your way  through the others until the stain is gone.

Please Note:
Not all stains can be removed. Some stains will cause permanent damage to your carpeting. Also, it is very important that you look into the proper cleaning instructions suggested by the carpet manufacturer. Some carpets that are made of natural fibers, such as wool, and should not be cleaned with these methods. Some oriental carpets with specific dyes also need special care. If you are not sure, find an inconspicuous area of the carpet then test for colorfastness. If you're still unsure, contact a professional carpet cleaner. Ask them how you should go about treating a stain on your carpet.
